ASABE recognizes selected external standards that support agricultural and biological engineering practices in the United States. These documents, commonly referred to as “recognized standards,” are developed outside of ASABE, reviewed by technical experts and identified as relevant to U.S. agricultural and biological engineering interests.

Purpose of the Recognized Documents List

  • Provides visibility to relevant external standards without requiring full adoption as an American National Standard
  • Supports committees, industry, regulators and stakeholders by identifying useful technical resources
  • Offers an efficient alternative when adoption is not practical due to time, cost, or procedural requirements
  • Helps committees highlight documents that complement ASABE standards activities

Eligibility and Submission Process

Any document developed by an accredited standards development organization (SDO) may be considered for recognition. To submit a document for consideration, contact the appropriate ASABE technical committee leadership or ASABE Standards Staff for assistance in routing your request.

Review and Approval

Submitted documents are evaluated by the relevant ASABE technical committee to confirm they meet the needs of industry and organizations involved in agricultural and biological systems. Documents that meet the criteria are approved through a formal ballot process.

Once listed, recognized standards are not interpreted by ASABE staff or committee members. Users are responsible for selecting and applying recognized standards appropriately.

Access to Recognized Standard

Recognized standards developed by other SDOs remain copyrighted and proprietary. These documents are not distributed by ASABE and must be purchased directly from the originating organization or an authorized distributor.
