Letter from the President
An Energized Direction: Highlights from the Fall Board Meetings
Hello ASABE Members,
I’m thrilled to share an update on the productive and invigorating sessions held at our recent fall Board of Trustees meetings hosted by Dr. Mari Chinn in the Oklahoma State University Agricultural Hall. This year, we took a critical step forward by dedicating two full days to intense idea sharing and collaboration between the ASABE Society Board of Trustees and the ASABE Foundation Board of Trustees. This joint effort was invaluable, helping us align our visions for the future of agricultural and biological engineering.
The core of our activity was a comprehensive, daylong strategic planning session where the Society Board focused on two complementary goals: strengthening our financial position and significantly enhancing our value proposition for you, our members.
Discussions were organized around four main areas critical for ASABE’s growth:
- Membership: Developing new ways to grow our community and support all career stages.
- Publications: Ensuring our journals and technical content remain the industry’s gold standard.
- Meetings & Events: Making our conferences and specialized events even more essential to your professional development.
- Sales, Advertising, and Sponsorship: Generating non-dues revenue to reinvest back into member programs.
Everyone left the meeting feeling incredibly energized and confident in the strategic path we’ve charted for the organization. Thank you for your continued dedication, and we look forward to sharing more specifics on these initiatives in the coming months!

ASABE Celebrates FEMA Partnership, Anniversary
ASABE had the opportunity recently to connect with manufacturers, distributors, and industry partners at the 75th Farm Equipment Manufacturers Association Fall Marketing & Distribution Convention, held in Las Vegas.
Attending on behalf of the Society, ASABE President-Elect Travis Tsunemori presented a commemorative plaque celebrating 75 years of this influential conference.
For decades, FEMA has been an instrumental partner in the initiation, development, and distribution of ASABE standards for the ag industry. We’re grateful for the relationships, conversations, and collaboration that have ensued along the way, which continue to move our industry forward.

New in Resource Magazine
The November-December issue of Resource has a variety of articles you’re sure to connect with!
This issue contains progress reports on two important initiatives: The Alliance for Modernizing African Agrifood Systems and the Circular Bioeconomy Systems Institute. ASABE continues to lead the way in these important spaces, so make sure to stay up to date on their latest activities.
Did you know ASABE is working on two parallel paths in support of biochar standards? Read all about it from ASABE HQ’s very own Scott Cedarquist.
And don’t miss ASABE Fellow Wayne Maley’s "Last Word" column. He takes a backward-and-forward look at agriculture, speculating what the future could bring with AI. We are sad to report that Wayne passed away at the age of 98 on October 5, before seeing his article published. (Find an obituary in last month's issue of Inside ASABE.)

In Memoriam
Roscoe Pershing
ASABE Fellow Roscoe Pershing passed away November 7, 2025.
Roscoe Louis Pershing, 85, of Champaign, Illinois, died November 7,2025, in his home surrounded in love by his wife and children.
Pershing was born on October 8, 1940, near Washington, Indiana. Growing up on the farm and being one of ten children taught him patience, gratitude, ingenuity, and perseverance. He graduated valedictorian from Washington High School in 1958, and earned degrees in engineering from Vincennes University, Purdue University, and the University of Illinois. He received the first PhD degree ever conferred by the agricultural and biological engineering department at the University of Illinois.
Pershing's professional career included almost twenty years with John Deere in engineering, research, and leadership roles. He was a primary expert in vehicle dynamics and simulation. He started teaching at Black Hawk College, where he refined his teaching skills and focused on effectively reaching each student. He became head of the agricultural and biological engineering the University of Illinois in 1985 and was later named associate dean of engineering, retiring in 2004. He helped make ABE an admired department throughout the country and contributed strongly to improved engineering education as associate dean. His "Executives in the Technological World" class was extremely popular for senior undergraduate students. In retirement, he remained a dedicated supporter of both the department and the college of engineering throughout his life, maintaining beautiful relationships with emeriti professors and work colleagues.
Elected a Fellow in 1986, Pershing was a 61-year member of the Society.
