Input Sought on Proposed 3D Competition
Every summer, ASABE student members gather at the annual meeting to compete, connect, and problem-solve through a variety of student design competitions. These events have become a highlight of the conference for many of us, bringing energy, creativity, and innovation to the AIM experience.
A new competition is proposed that will center on 3D printing. Because 3D printing is already widely used across ASABE competitions, this event would offer a natural way to bring together students with different interests and skillsets, while also giving new members a low-cost, high-engagement entry point into ASABE design challenges.
Each year would bring a different challenge. Students might be asked to recreate historical ag equipment, collaborate to reverse-engineer and assemble a machine, or build functioning systems to solve real-world tasks.
Learning outcomes, however, would remain consistent, with students gaining hands-on experience designing within constraints, working with tolerances, selecting materials, and making decisions under pressure. They'll develop their communication, iteration, and problem-solving skills, learning to adapt when things don’t go as planned and develop habits that define effective engineering teams in industry.
Whether you're excited to participate, have feedback or ideas, or would like to learn more, organizers would love to hear from you. Those interested are asked to complete the interest form or contact Audrey Frost.

In Memoriam
Donnell (Don) Hunt

ASABE Fellow Donnell (Don) R. Hunt, 98, of Urbana, Illinois, died May 19, 2025.
Born August 11, 1926, on a farm near Danville, Indiana, he spent his earliest days helping his father on the family farm, developing what would become a life-long love affair with tractors which eventually turned into his life’s work. Upon high school graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Army, and was deployed to Nagoya, Japan, toward the end of World War II. Attending college on the G.I. Bill, Hunt graduated from Purdue University in 1951, later earning master’s and PhD degrees from Iowa State University in 1954 and1958, respectively. In 1960, he jumped at an opportunity to relocate to Urbana, Illinois, when he accepted a full professorship at the University of Illinois’ College of Agriculture Department of Agricultural Engineering Power Machinery Division, where for the next 35 years he took great enjoyment in sharing his knowledge and passion for farm machinery with upcoming generations of ag engineers, surrounded by the world’s epicenter of the farm machinery industry. It was also during his years at Illinois that he authored a number of publications that advanced the standards in machinery management analytics and optimization. He also authored or co-authored a number of textbooks on the subject of power machinery, several of which remain in circulation today and have been admitted to the Library of Congress.
Hunt's expertise also led to a Fulbright Award to teach and conduct research in Ireland, in addition to numerous guest lecture engagements in other countries, including Iran, Sri Lanka, India, Australia, Canada, Mexico, Germany, the Netherlands and the Philippines. In 1985, he was tapped to become assistant dean and director of cooperative education for the university's college of engineering, in which capacity he served until his retirement in 1996.
Elected a Fellow in 1983, Hunt was a 74-year member of ASABE.

Claude J. Phene
Claude J. Phene passed away March 10, 2025, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, at the age of 91.
Born near Bordeaux, France, on July 11, 1933, in France, where his formative years were tragically interrupted by WWII and the deportation of his mother and grandmother when he was 10 years old. His paternal grandmother (Catholic) hid him and his brother in a small village outside of Bordeaux, where they were often left alone. Following the war, he returned to Bordeaux and completed secondary school and studied for his Bar-Mitzvah. Later he worked for the U.S. Army in France as a translator, where he met Elizabeth Murphy, the daughter of a U.S. Army Chief Master Sergeant. In 1955, he immigrated to the U.S., joined the U.S. Air Force, and was stationed at George AFB, Victorville, California; he then worked at Kaiser Steel and went back to school. As his interest in soils developed, he took a job at USDA Agricultural Research Service at the U.S. Salinity Lab in Riverside, California. He received a BA in physics and a PhD in soil science (1970), both from the University of California, Riverside.
Beginning an illustrious career in agricultural and water research, Phene was transferred to Florence, South Carolina, for eight years, then to Fresno, California, and the Water Management Research Lab (1978), where he worked until his retirement in 1994. Phene pioneered much of the work in drip irrigation, and particularly in subsurface drip irrigation for commercial agriculture. His colleagues regarded him as visionary, forward looking, ahead of his time, noting that he would forge ahead when others said it was not worthwhile and later proving them wrong. Phene authored or co-authored over 300 publications and received many professional awards both before and after his retirement from USDA.
Memorials can be made to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum.
Phene was a 48-year member of ASABE.
