ASABE Leads U.S. Delegation at ISO Meeting in Tokyo
United States delegates recently attended the ISO TC238 Solid Biofuels and Pyrogenic Biocarbon meeting held October 27–31 in Tokyo. Chris Wiberg, Ritu S. Linhart, and ASABE staff members Scott Cedarquist and Britni Wall attended on behalf of the U.S.
ASABE member Chris Wiberg, head of delegation for the U.S, presented the recently published American National Biochar Standard to ISO TC238 Task Group 1. ANSI/ASABE/USBI Standard for Methods for Measurement and Testing of Biochar represents a significant milestone in advancing the biochar industry. It establishes consistent, science-based procedures for analyzing biochar properties, ensuring reliable and comparable data across laboratories and applications. By promoting product quality, transparency, and confidence in biochar performance, the standard supports research alignment, market growth, and the development of policies that recognize biochar’s role in carbon management and sustainable agriculture.
Linhart is convenor of Working Group (WG) 6 Sampling & Sample Preparation and chaired a meeting of WG 6. The Technical Committee has expanded its scope to include pyrogenic biocarbon, and the group discussed the potential impact of the new pyrogenic biocarbon standards on existing WG 6 standards, including ISO 14780:2017 (Sample Preparation), ISO 18135:2017 (Sampling), and ISO 21945:2020 (Simplified Sampling Method for Small-Scale Applications).
During the TC238 plenary meeting, Cedarquist was recognized as one of four committee members who have been active since the inception of ISO TC238, in 2007.
ISO TC238 is one of fifteen mirror committees administered by ASABE. Additional details about ASABE involvement in international standards can be found online.

Peer-to-Peer Support for Your Professional and Technical Interests
Has your work become repetitive? Involvement in ASABE committees and communities could be just the antidote.
Committee participation introduces variety and fresh challenges. It can reignite passion for your profession by connecting you to its broader mission and community, as well as to other ASABE members with shared interests. Committee members often get early access to industry research, policy discussions, and professional development resources before they're widely available.
In short, committee participation is one of the most valuable benefits of your ASABE membership.
How to learn about ASABE committees and communities? You can search the database for groups that match your interest,. You can also check out this comprehensive list, which offers descriptions of each group along with a portal for expressing interest or, in some cases, joining with just a click.

Do you like the satisfaction of thumbing through hard copy? Exclusive to ASABE members, our printed Member Roster is available for purchase. It includes committee rosters as well as a member directory, and information on a variety of Society programs and activities.
