ASABE and Aquaculture Engineering Society Announce Strategic Partnership to Advance Global Aquatic Systems

ST. JOSEPH, MICHIGAN — The American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) and the Aquaculture Engineering Society (AES) are pleased to announce the formalization of a strategic partnership aimed at accelerating technical innovation and professional growth within the aquatic engineering sector.

This collaborative framework leverages ASABE’s century-long leadership in engineering standards and professional infrastructure with AES’s specialized expertise in the rapidly evolving field of aquaculture. As the world’s fastest-growing protein sector, aquaculture requires robust engineering solutions to ensure sustainability, food security, and environmental integrity.

“This partnership is a significant step forward in our mission to promote engineering in food, water, and energy systems,” said Cedric Calhoun, FASAE, CAE, executive director of ASABE. “By combining our standards-developing expertise with the niche technical knowledge of AES, we are creating a powerful engine for innovation that will benefit the global engineering community and the public at large.”

A cornerstone of this agreement is the ability for AES to leverage ASABE’s prestigious status as an ANSI-accredited standards development organization. The two societies have committed to the joint development of new technical standards beginning in 2027. This initiative will provide the industry with the rigorous, consensus-based framework necessary to implement emerging technologies safely and efficiently across global aquatic systems.

To foster cross-disciplinary collaboration, the partnership introduces a new joint-membership incentive. Members of both ASABE and AES will now be eligible for reciprocal discounts on membership in the partner organization. This initiative is designed to break down professional silos, allowing engineers to access a broader range of technical journals, conference programming, and networking opportunities across both societies.

“AES is excited to partner with ASABE to provide our members with enhanced resources and a stronger voice in the development of industry standards,” said Michael Timmons, president of AES. “Together, we are ensuring that the engineering profession remains at the forefront of sustainable aquatic food production.”
