The many challenges facing African agriculture

have led to high food product imports which are expected to reach $110B by 2025. On a positive note, it is estimated that investments in agriculture can create markets worth $80B per year over 10 years according to a report from the African Development Bank. 

Given that the agricultural sector is still the primary source of employment for most African countries and that 60% of the world’s arable land is still uncultivated in Africa, African agriculture is poised to be an engine of economic growth and development. The urgency caused by challenges such as population growth, rapid urbanization, growth in the middle class and related diet transformation, and climate change means we must take a bold, innovative value-chain–oriented approach to transform the African agrifood system by developing and deploying appropriate, modern technologies.

As the Alliance for Modernizing African Agrifood Systems

of the ASABE, we have taken a holistic approach in exploring the development and adoption of modern technologies to accelerate improvements in the food crop value chains in Sub-Saharan Africa. We are raising funds to conduct detailed situational assessments in collaboration with partners on the continent, promote technology and methodology development, assessment and deployment, enhance entrepreneurship and business development, provide capacity building and workforce development opportunities, facilitate communication and information dissemination, and to support our organizational structure.

AMAA Leaders, Partners Plan Conference in Nigeria

ASABE members Klein Ileleji (Purdue Univ), Michael Ngadi (McGill Univ), Mobolaji Omobowale (Univ Ibadan, Nigeria) and Folarin Alonge (Univ Uyo) took part on a partnership-building and conference-scoping trip in Nigeria in late September.

The group, traveling on behalf of ASABE's initiative Alliance for Modernizing African Agrifood Systems (AMAA), visited three cities, Abuja, Ibadan, and Lagos meeting with USAID and several prime contractors on USAID projects in Nigeria, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Nigerian Institute of Agricultural Engineers, Pan African Society of Agricultural Engineers, Sahel Capital African Food Changemakers, the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and some companies working in the ag mechanization space.

The trip enabled AMAA to convey its mission to potential stakeholders and plan out its 2023 Agricultural Innovation and Technology Conference and Exhibition scheduled to take place at the IITA in Ibadan in October 2023.

is of a modern, productive, and profitable agrifood system in sub-Saharan Africa that ensures food security, provides economic growth, and improves quality of life in a sustainable, equitable, and responsible manner.

Our Goals

• To create a framework that brings together stakeholders including entrepreneurs, innovators, investors/financial institutions, academic institutions, policy makers and farmers to create an ecosystem to promote modernization of the African agrifood system. Specific goals include:
• To create an ecosystem of innovation to promote technology and methodology development, assessment and deployment appropriate for the African agri-food system
• To promote public-private sector partnership to enhance entrepreneurship and business development
• To identify training needs and to build capacity to promote and sustain a modern agri-food system in sub-Saharan Africa
• To identify critical infrastructure and policy framework necessary for a modern agri-food system in sub-Saharan Africa
