FoodSecurityThe Challenge: To produce and provide healthy and safe food in a sustainable manner to the rapidly growing world population.

ASABE colleagues and others joined together in applying engineering and technology to address the challenge

A fast-growing world population, estimated to reach 9.1 billion in 2050, presents numerous challenges, many of them requiring scientific and technical solutions. ASABE recognizes three critical themes among these challenges—food security, water security, and energy security, all in the context of sustainability and climate change—and the Society is organizing a series of conferences to address them. The first event was held in May 2015, in Chicago, and considered the engineering adaptation and mitigation aspects of climate change. ASABE hosted the second in the series: the Global Food Security Conference, held in October 2016 in Stellenbosch, South Africa, in collaboration with Stellenbosch University.

The goal of the Global Food Security Conference was to bring together agricultural and biological engineers and peers from academia, government, and industry from across the world with local stakeholders to address the challenge of producing and providing healthy and safe food in a sustainable manner to the growing global population. Partnerships developed among sister organizations to address regional issues and barriers that are most relevant to regional food security.
